Sublimation heat press printing full-colour design onto sportswear fabric

What Is Sublimation Printing?

Sublimation uses heat to transfer dye into compatible polymer-based materials, most commonly polyester fabric. Because the dye becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top of it, the result can be a full-colour design with no separate print layer.

Usually a good fit

  • Polyester sportswear and performance apparel
  • Jerseys and teamwear for schools, clubs and events
  • Detailed, multi-colour or gradient artwork
  • Designs that need to feel part of the fabric

Check with us first

Conventional sublimation is generally not suitable for printing directly onto untreated cotton, and it does not lay down an opaque white ink layer, so dark garments are usually a poor match. Cotton and dark garments are often better served by DTF Printing, screen printing or embroidery. Not every polyester garment is automatically compatible either — we confirm suitability for your specific product.

General guidance: this section explains how sublimation works in general. Whether it suits your garment, artwork and order is confirmed in your quotation.

When Is Sublimation Printing the Right Choice?

Suitability depends on the specific garment, artwork and order. These are the points we look at when we review an enquiry.

Factors that decide whether sublimation suits an order
FactorWhat to consider
FabricSublimation dye bonds with polyester and similar polymer-based materials. Cotton and many blends are generally not suitable; the polyester content and fabric construction matter.
Garment colourSublimation does not use an opaque white ink layer, so it is commonly done on white or light-coloured polyester. Tell us your garment colour so we can advise.
ArtworkDye-based full colour suits detailed, multi-colour and gradient designs. Higher-resolution or vector artwork gives the best result.
Placement & coveragePrint size, placement and coverage depend on the product and production method. Share what you have in mind and we will confirm what is possible.
Quantity & designsFull sublimation is custom-made, with a minimum of 100 pcs per design. See the minimums and lead time.
Use & careThink about how often the apparel will be worn and washed. Always follow the garment’s care label.

Sublimation is not a universal solution. If it is not the best match for your garment or artwork, we will point you to a better method.

Sublimation vs Other Customisation Methods

Each method suits different garments, artwork and quantities. None is always better — use this as a starting point.
